The 1st Annual Grayson County Calf Scramble rules and application are now available. 

Youth must be a Grayson County Resident and/or attend a Grayson County School.  Youth must be ACTIVE in either a Grayson County 4-H club or a Grayson County School FFA program.  (Grayson County school includes private and homeschool programs).

Youth must be between the ages of 12-14 as of September 1, 2011.

NEW  - EXTENDED Deadline for applications is September 30 and must be signed by the participant, the parents/guardians and either your 4-H or AST advisor.

“Event Procedures, Rules and Safety Regulations” ©

1.  Have lots of fun; however, event safety will be paramount at all times.
 
2.  All applicants will be between the ages of 12 to 14 years of age as of September 1, 2011, in order to be considered for participation in the drawing and to participate in said event.
 
3.  This will be a co-ed event with young men and young women applicants fulfilling these age requirements, and they will compete on equal terms within the selection process as well as within this event.
 
4. All applicants making application as a Participant, must:
a. Complete all of the data elements on the event application form;
b. Must have the written approval of their parents or guardian;
c. Must be recommended by their Ag Teacher/4-H Advisor, FFA Advisor, etc.;
d. And said participation application must be submitted to the selection Grayson County Board Selection Board not later than September 30, 2011.  (Deadline extended)
5. Each applicant must provide a written agreement from their parents/guardian, and same will be provided to the Grayson County Fair Board stating their parents/guardian have the financial wherewithal to pay addition money--in addition to the $500 voucher--as is required to purchase a heifer calf of the Participant’s own choosing.
6. There will initially be twenty Primary Participants (increasable to a total of twenty-five) selected by a name drawing from the qualified applicants on designated days and at a designated time prior to said event.
 
7. There will also be initially ten Alternate Participants (five of whom can be allocatable to be Primary Participants) selected by a similar name drawing from the remaining qualified applicants on a designated day and at a designated time prior to said event.
 
8. Sources of Event Participants (All participants must either be a 4-H member or a member of their local FFA Chapter):
a. Youth attending Public Schools within Grayson County who fulfill the age requirement.
b. Grayson County residents attending Private Schools within Grayson County who fulfill the age requirement.
c. Grayson County residents being Home Schooled within Grayson County who fulfill the age requirement.
 
9.  Education as a Part of the Selection Process:
a. Public School Attendees -- All county applicants attending public schools within Grayson County will have their drawing slip placed within selection containers based upon their specific public school district.
b. Private School Attendees – All applicants attending private schools will have their drawing slip placed within one container based upon attending same. 
c. Private School Attendees – All applicants being home schooled will be placed within one container based upon same. 
d.  Individuals who have dropped out of school or who have be expelled from a school will be automatically disqualified from making application. No exceptions.
 
10.                      Order of Selection Methodology:
a.  The names of the thirteen public schools, “Private” Schools,” and “Home Schoolers” will be placed within a container.
b. These fifteen names will be drawn establishing the selection order of these education systems. 
 
11.                     The Fifteen Selection Containers -- These containers will be placed in the selection order as identified by the “Order of Selection Methodology.”  
 
12.                      Selection Sequence:
a. First Round -- One applicant will be chosen from each of these containers in the “Order of Selection Methodology” until the first selection round has been completed. Result – Fifteen Primary Participants
b. Second Round – A second applicant will be chosen from each of these containers in the “Order of Selection Methodology” until the second selection round has also been completed. Result – A total of Twenty Primary Participants and Ten Alternate Participants.
c. The last ten applicants chosen during this Second Selection Rounds will be initially designated as: Alternate Participants.
d. If any of these fifteen containers should have less than two applicants to be drawn from therein; then, that/those containers will be passed over when empty in favor of the next container(s) in the sequence. 
13.                     There will be ten calves selected and provided for said event. This number of calves will be increased to eleven or even twelve calves should there be eleven or twelve Sponsors; respectively. 
 
14.                     If the number of event sponsors should increases to eleven, then the first to Alternate Participants will become Primary Participants. And, if the number of events sponsors should increase to twelve, then the next three Alternate Participants will also become Primary Participants.
 
15.                     The calves utilized for this event are provided as a professional courtesy to facilitate this event. And, under no circumstances will any of these event calves become the property of any Participant nor official, and will be returned to the firm providing same.
16.                      All previously selected Primary Participants must arrive and check-in at the event site two-hours prior to, but no later than one-hour prior to, the scheduled event’s start at 2 P.M. on Sunday, October 9, 2011, in order to remain a Primary Participant for said event. Failure to fulfill same will automatically disqualify said Primary Participant, and said slot will at that time be considered: Vacated.
 
17.                     All previously selected Alternate Participants, in order to replace Primary Participant, must also arrive and check-in at the event site two-hours prior to, but no later than one-hour prior to, the scheduled event start at 2 P.M. on Sunday, October 9, 2011, in order to remain qualified as a Alternate Participant. Selection to fill one or more Vacated positions will be by a name drawing from those present at least one-hour prior to this event. 
 
18.                     One or more Alternate Participants may be chosen via a name drawing, one hour prior to the event time, to fill any and all Vacated positions. 
 
19.                      All Primary and Alternate Participants must attend the procedures, safety, and rules briefings. And, the last minute replacement of a Primary Participant by a qualified Alternate Participant can take place even up to the time of the event should same become necessary.
 
20.                      There will be a Senior Arena Judge and an Assistant Arena Judge on horseback within the arena during event times.
 
21.                     There will be a selected number of event designated Arena Referees strategically positioned at selected locations within the Arena.
 
22.                     There will be two event designated Arena Umpires located at the “Finish Line.”
 
23.                      There will be a selected number of event designated Perimeter Referees strategically positioned at selected locations outside, along the immediate perimeter of the Arena.
 
24.                     The instructions and decisions of the Senior Arena Judge will be absolute and final in all cases/at all times.
 
25.                      All participants will utilize a rope halter provided by, or approved by the Senior Arena Judge. Or for which they receive instructions for and will demonstrated same during the Procedures, Safety, and Regulations Meetings
 
26.                     All calves will be caught by a single participant only; e. g, no team efforts will be allowed. After the first warning, those participants who persist in doing same will be disqualified, and will be instructed to immediately exit the arena area.
 
27.                     A participant catching a calf must properly place a rope halter upon their calf before moving same to the “Finish Line.”
 
28.                     A participant must move their calf totally across the Finish Line as judged by the Arena Umpires, and maintain control over the calf thereafter until all the remaining calves have been captured and moved across the Finish Line. Ten Event Handlers may be assigned and made available to help these ten winners safely maintain control of their calves
 
29.                     If a participant has a rope halter upon a calf within the Arena and then loses control of same:
a. The mounted Senior Arena Judge, Arena Judge, or one of the Arena Referees will catch the subject calf.
b. This designated official will remove the rope halter from the calf, and then release the calf.
c. The Participant who lost control of this calf will have his rope halter returned to him/her by this official.
d. After this action, any and all remaining Participants will be allowed to capture this calf, place their own rope halter upon same, and move the calf across the: “Finish Line.” 
e. This same procedure will be repeated as necessary.
 
30.                      If a participant has a halter upon a calf, has moved the calf partially or even totally across the Finish Line, and then loses control of same:
a. The mounted Senior Arena Judge, Arena Judge, or one of the Arena Referees will catch the subject calf.
b. This designated official will remove the rope halter from the calf, and then release the calf.
c. The Participant who lost control of this calf will have the rope halter returned to him/her by this official.
d. After this action, any and all remaining Participants will be allowed to capture this calf, place their own rope halter upon same, and move the calf across the finish line. 
e. This same procedure will be repeated as necessary.
 
31.                      Any unsafe act(s)--as ruled by the Senior Arena Judge--toward another other Participants, event calf(s), or event officials will be notified of said warning by the Senior Arena Judge. A repeat occurrence will result in the immediate disqualification of that participant. And, said participant will be instructed to immediately exit the event arena site.  
 
32.                     The first Participant who successfully and safely capture a calf, place their rope halter upon the calf, move this calf across the Finish Line, and maintains control of their calf until directed by an Arena Umpire will be considered the First Place Trophy Winner. And, will in addition be a recipient of a $500 Heifer Calf Voucher Winner be awarded a First Place Trophy.
 
33.                     The remaining nine winning participants who successfully and safely capture a calf, place a rope halter upon the calf, move this calf across the Finish Line, and maintain control of their calf until directed by an Arena Umpire will be considered a Heifer Calf Voucher Winner.
 
34.                     The ten Voucher Winners will be expected to utilize their voucher for the purpose of purchasing a registered heifer of a breed of their own choosing, obtain the appropriate ownership documents for a registered heifer owner, as proof of such purchase to the Calf Scramble Committee of the Grayson County Fair Board, and will make registration documents available as an entry requirement for the Annual Winners’ Circle Spring Heifer Show at the 2012 Texoma Exposition and Livestock Show, and the Annual Winners’ Circle Fall Heifer Show at the 2012 Grayson County Fair.
 
35.                     The breeder/stocker sponsors as well as the other providers of registered heifers are encouraged to assist each voucher winner in the selection of their desired animal, and if possible to assist them with a reduced price for same. This will be much appreciated.
 
36.                     If a third party individual/firm should become involved in assisting one or more of these voucher winners in the selection and/or purchase of their registered heifer calf, then said third party; e. g., school ag teacher, 4H Advisor, FFA Advisor, etc. will certify in writing they did not solicit nor receive any form of a finders fee, purchase rebate, gratuity, nor any other form of monetary or other compensation/renumeration for assisting this their voucher winner in the selection and purchase of a registered heifer calf. There will be no exceptions!   
 
37.                     The ten Voucher Winners will be required to actively participate in the Annual Winners’ Circle Spring Heifer Show at the 2012 Texoma Exposition and Livestock Show. And, may also be encouraged to actively participate in the Annual Winner’s Circle Spring Heifer Show at the 2013 Texoma Exposition and Livestock Show
 
38.                     The ten Voucher Winners will also be required to actively participate in the Annual Winners’ Circle Fall Heifer Show at the 2012 Grayson County Fair. And, may also be encouraged to actively participate in the Annual Winner’s Circle Fall Heifer Show at the 2013 Grayson County Fair.
 
39.                     The ten Voucher Winners will be allowed to show their heifer calf at any other in-county/state or out-of-county/state livestock shows of their own choosing, and at their own expense. Said showing s will always be secondary to their fulfilling their obligations to actively participate in Annual Winner’s Circle Spring Heifer Show at the Texoma Exposition and Livestock Show as well as the Annual Winner’s Circle Fall Heifer Show at the Grayson County Fair.
 
40.                     Any and all decisions and rulings made by the Calf Scramble’s Event Coordinator and the Calf Scramble’s Senior Arena Judge are final, and un-appealable.
 
41.                     Last, but most certainly not least, each and every Participant will be expected to have lots of fun; however, the safety of all event participants, event calves, and arena officials will be paramount at all times. There will be no exceptions.
